So, what this thread basically is here for is to gather up all the features and drawbacks of the two programs, and then compare them to each other, so we can figure out which one is better in both the short-term and long-terms. This could serve as an answer for those wondering which program is better and such. All I really know is that Photoshop seems to be preferred more, but GIMP is free.

Anyways, discuss.

I'm with Sturm on this one. Sure, GIMP may have a few issues, being open-source and all, but it can do just about anything Photoshop can, and it IS free. Gimp has my vote.

Holy crap...if I knew earlier there was a free program that can be somewhat compared (though doesn't have all the features) to Photoshop I would've gotten that sooner.

...not that I have Photoshop, cause I'm a cheap bastard...>[

Another point for GIMP is that it's way more multi-platform than Photoshop is.

...what?

GIMP is better if you don't have either. If you have both, Photoshop is better.

What do you mean "what"? :( IF YOU WERE REFERRING TO WHAT I SAID THEN DO YOU NOT KNOW THE MEANING OF MULTI-PLATFORM? Or, maybe you'd know what I meant if I said cross-platform instead?

And you should say why you believe Photoshop is better! I'm pretty sure that there's nothing Photoshop can do that GIMP can't. What Photoshop does, to my memory, is eat away at resources like crazy for no apparent reason, and adhere to the laziness of people by making a ton of options that a lot of people will find worthless since you can do what the option does without actually using the option.

I already said, if they're pretty much equal, GIMP wins if you have neither. If you have Photoshop and GIMP, then Photoshop is better due to fact that GIMP has a steep learning curve. GIMP is very impressive, and it only has a subset of Photoshop tools and they "feel" different.

GIMP is an amazing application for a free open source, but as I see it, PSE is fine for Amatuers, GIMP is fine for people who want to save money, and PS is for people who are serious about Photography.

However, if you only need about 90% of Photoshop has, and don't need Photoshop, GIMP is fine. Like I said, if you have neither, GIMP being free wins it over. If you have both, its like comparing a 2000 to an XP. They'll both run what you want and need, but XP has a few superior factors.

As for cross-platform, you can get free plugins to get it to run on other systems.

And XP is known for being a huge memory hog compared to 2000...

Also, I don't believe you on the plug-ins thing. I've never seen or heard anything like that. Do you have some sort of crazy link?

O.k, so its not exactly a plugin. But you get the idea.

They've also got a a Suite running out that has a lot more multiplatform functions.

Overall, GIMP being free still tops it, but I can't see why you'd use it if you have both available unless you're just really used to it.

But I'm pretty sure CrossOver Office isn't free.

What about people who hate programs that eat resources as badly as Photoshop does?

Photoshop eats more resources than GIMP does. That's the point I was trying to get across, Sauce. This has nothing to do with how good your computer is.

But if you have enough resources on your computer and then some to spare, it shouldn't be a problem, right?
