Also, I showed how many layers I usually use for an image. I then merge all the color down and change the layers to standard so I can work on abackground image behind it. I didn't bother with a BG for this image.

8 layers? that's not really a lot. Dodge and burn works well enough for me... but yeah, it's because I'm lazy. Finding the right colors to use is a pain, but it's worth the time.
I think the most layers I've used is about 35... give or take 1 or 2. I'm a freak about messing up even though I have an undo button there for a reason XD although, I don't use 1 layer for each individual color, I usually do shading and lighting for each color on the layers that each color is on and they're broken down into sections (if that even made any sense....) and that's about 15-20 layers including the lineart... the rest of it is background oO; -sucks at backgrounds-. Eh, but I've been lazy in my coloring lately and have been trying to figure out a way to use dodge and burn and still make it look nice... and I've just recently switched to a Windows 98 very old computer that can't seem to handle Adobe Photoshop... it crashes after I use more than 10 layers T^T; I don't know why either. My only conclusion is that my computer hates me. And merging layers doesn't seem to help oO; once I use about 10 layers (merged or not) it dies
-edit- ah, OC XD my trial version just ran out >< good program though.

I have the full version of OC, its a lot of fun. I can't live without it! *laughs* I don't use many layers at all, because I figure if I'm going to mess up, I'll mess up no matter so just go with teh flow. XD
