Sharks rarely attack humans, unless they confuse them for animals they naturally eat. That's why surfers get attacked so often.

Um, ever heard of navigating by the stars? Pirates (and sailers in general) did it all the time. And maybe the current is too strong for someone unfamiliar with the ocean to fight.

Ninjas don't attack during the day, and it's not hard to do two things at once (swim and stare up). And I believe it was your stupid idea that they can run on water that made this argument about them fighting in the sea. But, no matter where they were fighting, pirates would win.
