After programming and modifying a simple Space Invaders game in my AP Computer Science class, I rather play a game.

Last I checked RPG maker can only make RPGs. I prefer to make any game I choose instead of being locked.

You'll change your tune even quicker. I only listed RPG Maker because it was quick access and the simplest way to make a game, and even then it's STILL a daunting task.

I don't think you understand the massive amount of work it takes to make a gsme. You have to program/debug/oversee everything/etc. If you say "I just want to write the story/design the gameplay/draw the characters!" then you're an idiot and don't know what entails making a game.

I'm actually taking college courses to work to becoming a game designer actually... I love making games, I used to make some on RPG Maker and on BYOND (Although I was too lazy to study the coding for BYOND, so my games sucked and I couldn't host them due to me router firewall *grumble* )

I have RPG Maker 2. It's a lot of hard work to get anything original on there.

After I tried, I'd rather play them as well. I wouldn't mind contributing to the making of a game, but I don't want to do a one-man project.

Anyone who's thinking about going into game dsign as a career, my honest advice to you is don't. Not only does it take a massive amount of effort that goes to waste, the industry also sucks.

I know two people working/worked in the game industry, and it's one of the WORST industries ever. One of them kept getting fired because the people he was working with were dicks so he had to hop from job to job, each with more assholes than the last. The other's stuck at a dead end position and quit because everyone he worked with was pretty much a fuckface. He ended up being a normal non-game programmer.

Seriously, don't.

But making them is fun too... <_<
Well that's going off the "It's as fun to read a book, as it is to write it" (Disclaimer: Unless you suffer from chronic writer's block or any other such write-inhibiting problem)

I used to make things on RPG Maker all the time. All day.
...
I never finished any of them though. I have a short attention span.

As for me, I'll prefer to make games any day.

What does "Make game" mean?
I would love to be a game designer. There was a game design contest at the 2007 game developer conference - Three game designers were charged with making a game design based on a needle and thread. Those interested can check it out here:
Gamasutra Article on Game Design Challenge
I like the work of Shigeru Miyamoto (Game designer for Mario, Zelda, Metroid).

But like most people here, I wouldn't enjoy being a programmer or artist.
Also, can someone tell me the difference between "Game Producer" and "Game Director"? These are both game dev management positions - I'm not exactly sure who is responsible for what. Everyone knows the difference for movies - The director is responsible for guiding actors to their best possible performance while the producer is responsible for everything else (Pre/post production, sfx, editing, etc...).

Next question: What goes through the minds of character designers? If you look at sting games, the characters look pretty normal. Look at any 3-D final fantasy game and you ask "What were they thinking???"

If you're talking about characters designed by Nomura, let's just say he likes zippers...a lot. Other then that I like the character art of the FFs.

Nomura likes his spiky hair, too.

His over-sized spiky hair.

What about BELTS?

And I would never want to work on a game. Just making a tiny mod required hours of work for me, mainly trying to figure out what was wrong with my textures and scripts. The game is actually pretty mod friendly, so I can't imagine how hard and time consuming it would be working on something from scratch.
