Finished reading The Canadians at War 1939/45 Volume two, and the smaller, third volume that I managed to find at an antique store. The series included a number of excerpts from other books, and now I'm going nuts trying to find the original books. One of them, a collections of stories from a surgeon, was published in 1946 and I've only been able to find it at really high prices. Others I can't even find at all. I guess I'll check some libraries, but I'd prefer to own copies.
Read The Taming of the Canadian West, which was kinda boring. I've never really been interested in that area of history. Almost finished reading At The Sharp End. Great book. If you're interested in WWI at all I recommend reading it. Even though it's strictly about the Canadian Expeditionary Force, most of it applies to all fighting on the Western Front. |

Procession of the Dead/Ayuamarca by Darren Shan. I think I'm reading far too much into this psychologically because of Silent Hill. But I think its really good. I'm about two-thirds through, and I'll probably finish today.

The Complete Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
After seeing the movie when it first came out, I wanted to read the original works to see how Robert Downey, Jr.'s performance compared to Doyle's idea of Holmes. While he did a great job in the movie, it doesn't quite fit when compared to the original. His Holmes seemed like a complete slob in everything that didn't involve his work, whereas Doyle's Holmes is precise and meticulous in almost everything he does. The Holmes in the movie was also cynical about everything, which doesn't come up in the book. Holmes and Watson's relationship in the movie also struck me as being bittersweet, whereas they're extremely close in the written works. I've been chipping away at the compilation for a while now. There are over 1,200 pages and I just hit page 315. I'm so glad it's not close to being over yet. XD ~~~ Two wrongs don't make a right, but three rights make a left.

Haven't posted here in a while. I still haven't finished Gravity's Rainbow, but I've been reading other books. On my flight to Ukraine I finally got around to Orwell's Animal Farm and Shelley's Frankenstein. Good stuff. I especially liked the latter having read Paradise Lost (part of Shelley's inspiration for the novel). Currently reading Campbell's The China Study. Super interesting.

I still haven't finished Sherlock, but now I'm reading Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim by David Sedaris. Not nearly as disturbing and dysfunctional as Running With Scissors and twice as funny.

Rocketing through the books this summer. Three weeks into break and I've begun and finished all the Scott Pilgrim books (really good), Duncan the Wonder Dog (super good), I'm almost finished with Learn You a Haskell, and about half way through Gray Hat Python and The China Study (the latter of which, to be fair, I started several months ago, but I've done a decent portion of my reading these past three weeks).

I am honestly considering saving up for an e-reader of some sort. I have no shelf space left for books but I keep buying them anyway and this is becoming a problem.
Also I finished The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle and promptly had it confiscated by my father who expressed interest in reading it, only to decide he would rather read the version in the original Japanese. In the meantime, I've been chipping away at Crime and Punishment. Good thing this isn't a borrowed copy. |
