A warning is a message aimed to inform someone of danger, and, usually, a way to prevent the danger.
A warning on Invision boards is meant to inform someone that they stepped over a line or are close to doing so. A warning is best accompanied by: 1. A reason for the warning. 2. A link to the offending post or posts, if possible.
The first is needed to inform staff, including future staff, of the offense, so that they know in the future if a person has been warned for a similar offense previously, and take appropriate action. It is also used to clear up any possibility that the offender does not know what his or her offense was, and thus shifts the responsibility of wise action to the offender. If the offender does not know the reason for the offense, then the warning will cause the user to be more cautious overall in the future, or will be ignored altogether. If the similar offense does occur in the future, the offender can claim that he/she was not clearly warned previously, and he/she would have a case. Thus, the first is necessary to close a technical loophole.
The second is needed because, due to a limitation in IPB software, links aren't given in warnings. A link to an offending post is necessary so that a person is not warned twice for the same offense, and so that other staff members can review the case even if the warner leaves in the future. It also aids the "reason" clause. Sometimes this is not possible because the post needs to be deleted, but in all other cases, it should be given.
I don't mind taking a warning, but this is not a comment befitting a proper warning: | QUOTE | | Its Rai, do I really need a reason? |
