Golden Sun was my favorite game before I came across Riviera. I love both games, and it tears me apart to choose, but even though the secong one is much longer and there's so much more adventuring to do, the first one just seems more famillar and comfortable to me. Don't know how else to describe it.
So I voted for GS1
EDIT: ah, yes. Air's Rock. I know it inside and out know, but I have to say, the first time I played it I found it quite frustrating and tedious.

Then, at the end, all you get is Reveal, a spell that, in the first game, you get simply by talking to a monk.
(don't know if that needed to be a spoiler, but you never know...)

Golden Sun Two. I just found it more enjoyable. Like others have said, it is longer, and in my opinion just way more fun. Plus we also get to see Felix's side of the story. And I don't recall having to go through Air's Rock to get to Gaia Rock o.O Atleast not after you got past Air's Rock.

i loved both games. i got really mad at the second one because i could not for the life of me get one of the best swords near the end. i tried for hours on end and never got it. that was stupid.
