Both games have very different, and great in their own way, gameplay, and deep stories with a good handful of great characters. However, my vote is going to Yggdra Union. YU just has this... edge that Riviera only has a little of. Deeper story, maybe even a little darker at points father in, there isn't a cut and dry "bad guy," (maybe that's just me) and all that jazz.

I like Yggdra Union better because I don't like the moving system in riveria. I still like riveria and it's plot which I find is deep, the multiple endings are fun to work for. Hades was cool. But I got way more into Yggdra Union and it's much longer. ( well for me anyway )

I personally enjoyed Riviera better. From the moment I started playing the game, to the moment I finished it, I was entertained and compelled to keep playing. As for YU, I don't know why, but it didn't intrigue me as much as Riviera did. I played for a day or two, and ever since then, I haven't even touched it. I'm not saying I don't like YU though, as it is one of the more entertaining games for the GBA. I just didn't feel like playing it for 6 hours a day for a week like I did with Riviera. >_>
I think the reason behind this was mainly because of the art and storyline (0_0) that Riviera had. Riviera's story seemed more interesting and original, while YU's story seemed very similiar to FE's story of a princess trying to reclaim her kingdom. Riviera also included many CGs throughout the game, while in YU, the only CG I've seen was in the introduction. Although then again, I haven't completed the game yet. YU doesn't have CGs because it doesn't need them as much as Riviera did; Riviera had barely passable sprites. YU has very large, expressive sprites.
