Mac OS 9 I believe... and I don't care if you've ever had someone try to sell you insurance at church...those loading screens on the school ones are the longest 5 minutes of your life...

That's OS 9.
That's before Apple scrapped the code they had been using since OS 1 and based OS X off of Darwin (a BSD variant).

So we're basically getting Unix in a pretty package?

Well yeah, that's normally what I imply when I say "pretty package".

I wouldn't be using Windows anyway. If I got an x86 notebook, i'd run Linux or BSD on it.

Anyway, I don't really see Flash memory replacing hardrives in computers anytime soon. Now in personal devices such as DAPs and gaming devices such as the PSP, I could see it happening. But the limited write limit of flash makes it inconvienient to have as any sort of permanent storing solution.

It's a fairly large write limit.
Most people replace their computers before they'd ever reach said maximum.

I know... But in this lawyer-happy country we might see a class-action suit...I swear, they spend more time on wording the EULA than they do actually making the product... But a 36 GB flash drive... I rather like my hard-disk...now make it small and put it in a D.A.P. at an affordable price and i'm sold...

Is this thread about flash drives? Well, its interesting technology.
Though the seek time is none, transfer speeds are at the moment, lower than traditional drives resulting is less performance. This could change in the future though. For right now, cost of a flash drive is approx 5 times more expensive than conventional (That's in terms of cost per Gigabyte). Flash drives are much more shock-resistant than conventional drives. That's great, but only matters in notebook applications. Reliability information on flash drives is scarce. So in summary, flash drives are too expensive and don't offer enough advantages over conventional technology.

Flash drives might never catch up to conventional, or it might happen in five years! You never know.

Well its because its smaller than hard drives and contain non moving parts, sorta like ram but cheaper. Speaking of which I wouldn't mind making a RAM drive because RAM uses better memory than USB which makes it even more expensive. Anyway why would I buy a 36GB flash drive when I can get a 2.5" 160GB hard drive for a lot less. It uses usb as power as well. Unless of course I'm rich and have nothing else to spend it on.

As for laptops run them both. Mac and PC.

36 GB is nothing.

As for laptops, use whatever works best for you. Whatever suits your needs best.
