Hey gaiz any idea why my code would be running old versions of a class when I've tried deleting all files involving that class and remaking them twice? I tried deleting a semicolon in my class file and it doesn't give me any compiler errors.

So I got an 88 on my Complex exam, even though I did the first question backwards and got full credit(0 as the Arg instead of pi), but whatever >_>. Tomorrow I have my PDEs exam, and I haven't done any work in class that didn't involve Fourier series. At least the Intermediate ODEs exam will be easy, since three or four courses I've taken dealt with fixed points and whatever else is going on.

I'll just make this point I guess. The book that i'm using in question doesn't call what we've been discussing definitions, and goes out of its way to prove the statements (If a|b and a|c, then a|(bx+cy) for some x and y is defined as a theorem in my book and has a proof for it). There are actual "definitions" in the book, like d=(a,b), and thats stupid to prove because its a definition of what the greatest common divisor is, its just the notation you're supposed to use. Thats really about in on me using the definition here. If you're saying that the concept is so simple that its practically the definition, I suppose I can agree there.

Well, the a|(bx+cy) thing is definitely not definitions. You're not using any new symbols, you're just using the same old ones (+, *, |), so you have to prove that the statement is compatible with your definitions (i.e. prove it). However, the definition of the symbol | is something you can't prove.

d = (a,b) is not really a definition in the way that's meant for math. You're just temporarily assigning d the value of (a,b), and the symbol (,) is defined to be the greatest common divisor, and "greatest" is determined by the order, and "common divisor" is defined to be q such that \exists x s.t. qx = a and \exists y s.t. qy = b.

For the natural numbers with arithmetic (N, 0, 1, +, *) (note there's no / or -, so you can't use those), your assumptions are something like (for all a, b, c \in N):
(definition of addition)
- a+b = b+a
- (a+b)+c = a+(b+c)
- a+0 = a (definition of 0)
(definition of multiplication and compatibility with addition)
- ab = ba
- (ab)c = a(bc)
- 1a = a (definition of 1)
- a(b+c) = ab+bc
(some other crap that's uncommon)
- a+b = a+c iff b = c
- for any set S, if 0 \in S, and for every k \in S we have k+1 \in S, then N \subset S

(I think that's enough, but you can check it against http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peano_arithmetic and see if the definition is equivalent)

So using those, we DEFINE a|b to mean \exists x s.t. ax = b. Once we define that, we can prove anything that uses those symbols, but not anything that uses other words and symbols.

Are you sure it's running old versions? Make some very obvious change, like printing when it's constructed. Also make sure you save.

Thanks for the advice/offer Rai. I kinda solved the compiling issue by compiling the file separately. But I also just talked to my professor about some hierarchy issues I was having, so I'm going to scrap what I have and start from scratch. If I run into other problems I'll send my code to you, if that's okay.

So I still haven't turned in my code that was due two days ago because I have some problem that even my stupid professor can't fix. I sent him my source code so he can "fix" it and send it back so I can correct it ('cause, y'know, I have ALL THE TIME IN THE WORLD), but I'm nowhere close to being done with the rest of the program and if it's not in by tomorrow I get a zero. I don't even want to look at the fucking code and I have two other assignments due tomorrow morning that I still need to do. Hearing my other professors talking about new assignments now is making me physically ill.

Hopefully 1) I won't fail my midterm tomorrow in HEY GUESS WHAT COMP SCI and 2) Tsuki's cake will cheer me up. Someone switch lives with me please.

So I took my PDEs exam this morning. Got the first question right thanks to rodlogic, ignored the piece-wise given to us as 1(mine was x) in the second questions(Fourier sin series nonsense), couldn't figure out how to make something equal 1 in the third question, and fudged up my lambda in the fourth. Always Czech.
