Inti Creates changed the formula from "Get new weapons and use them on the right bosses" to "Charge up saber, dodge attack, attack, repeat". That's not to say I don't think the Zero series is great; I own all of the games, but they will always remain inferior in my mind.
You realise Saber combos do more than charged hits unless you have the weakness chips right?
You can easily beat every Zero game without charging once, especially 4 where you can just abuse the Knuckles.
Anyway, half of what makes Zero series so great is the fact it's concluded. It had a much darker and more serious atmosphere to the rest of the MM games, and has a true conclusion and a plotline THAT MAKES ACTUAL SENSE.
If you didn't think the final battles of MMZ4 were plain kickass you don't deserve to be playing MegaMan games.
1/4th through the games you will have the element chips. And most bosses are difficult to combo without being hurt.
Maybe the plot DID have a conclusion, but you can not deny the numerous cheap plot devices, or the simple fact

that Zero can survive an atomic bomb exploding in his face but has no chance of survival in a plummeting space craft.
*End spoilers*
The Zero games were too short and too shallow for that age. But it seems that what you appreciate is how they are purely hardcore. For me, it's not worth my money. Maybe my time, but not my money.
