SoCal in general has a lot of shops and malls scattered everywhere. Best choice and not because I'm from SoCal.
But if you're not staying long, I'd recommend SF. They have a decent amount of stores and a huge mall all in one place.
Also their Japanese Town is pretty authentic compared to LA's Little Tokyo. Lots of anime, manga, clothes and other things, so if you want to buy Japanese stuff without going to Japan, I'd go there. They have pretty damn good crepes too.
Never been to Detroit but I think it's the most depressed or dangerous city in the US...might be both.
As for Vegas, I wouldn't go there solely for shopping unless you're ballin. There are some outlet malls around it but overall it's still expensive. Plus there are some stores on the way to it, so if you're flying you're going to miss those. They have a kickass Fry's Electronics though.
