I prefer the latter. Games with shorter or not that satisfying main quests but lots of optional stuff to do, or a focus on time or score attacking. Or ones that encourage multiple walkthroughs rewarded with bonus material or enhanced gameplay. or games with focus on online multiplayer and generally ones where you have to learn to be good at but then are rewarded with a great experience.

Which probably is the reason I like Sonic CD so much. The main game is not the main attraction, the heart of the game lies in the time attack mode. All the stages are designed especially to be TAable, with lots of routes, shortcuts, tricky enemy-bouncing manoeuvres, exploitable physics and so on.
Whereas Sonic 3 & Knuckles, which arguably is a great game as well doesn't fit my tastes at all, with the stages (and whole game) being very long and rather wanting to give the player a nice experienced by just beating it.
Riviera I also like partly because it's pretty short but rewards multiple playthroughs with lots of unlockables and getting better at it yields high scores.

I prefer both + long games with alot of replay value (i.e Riviera- long but has extra scenes & items)
jet set radio future is an example of short and alot of replay value, test runs and vs mode
btw: if words are mispelled its probably because im using my PSP
