I'm not too fond of using Durant for some bizarre reason, but does he become essential later in the game?

No, I mean about the A.Shield blocking skills.
A.S. Shield is Annihilation and (something, either Skill or Status, I don't remember) Shield. Why would Annihilation block out Item Break and Steal?
