Hailing from Sweden,
Bathory are a legendary first-wave black/viking metal band, and are considered among the pioneers of the black metal genre.
Forming in 1983, they've had a long and prosperous career (12 full-length releases right up until 2003) but have unfortunately disbanded. Quorthon, the "founder and main songwriter" of the band died of apparent heart failure in June 2004, aged 39.
Bathory are one of my favourit bands because of their versatility, playing both epic hymns and gritty, apocalyptic war marches. The album
Blood On Ice is a conceptual story album; every track is a chapter in a story, telling of how a young boy's village is raided, and avenges his father's dead in an epic struggle of mythology and fantasy. A masterpiece to be sure.
Short bio (From Wikipedia):
If you are a fan of
Celtic Frost or
Venom, then you don't need to check these guys out; you already have by now.
Black metal veterans and newcomers alike are likely to enjoy
Bathory.
