Does anyone here use GIMP? If you do, can you tell me how to make the background behind something transparent?

Cut it out. Polygonal Lasso with a feather is useful, but if you really can't be bothered, put some feather on your Magic Wand and try that.

There are several tools you can use to cut out images.

The process I usually use (if it's a solid/semi-solid colour at least) is add an alpha channel to the image. Select all areas I want transparent, either with colour or wand select. Grow selection by 2, feather by 3, shrink by 1 (with shrink from border turned off). Then cut. Of course, the numbers can vary from image to image, and I usually use this process on large images I will be scaling down.
Also, autocrop is a great tool.
