Show why the statement does not prove what it's trying to prove.

1. "Don't listen to him. He's just a troll."

Because it makes it seem like trolls are useless, so of course, you'll probably end up talking to the troll anyway.

That's... completely wrong.

Someone's trying to say, "He's a troll, therefore he's wrong."

So is this person claiming that the whole troll race is wrong?

Do you like doing this Rai?

But if you are acknowledging trolls, you are somehow breaking that statement. Do whatever.

That guy loses because he doesn't explain why that other guy is a troll. That jerk.

Stereotypes are never completely right about every member of the group that you are judging.

there is no proof. without valid evidence, there's no proof if what he says is wrong.

The correct answer is:
Even if he's a troll, it doesn't make him wrong. It doesn't matter whether or not he's a troll.

It's called argumentum ad hominem. Argument to the man. May come in the form of insults, attacks on credibility. Basically, the person can't be trusted to be right. It's a logical fallacy because it doesn't prove anything about the argument, and only claims something about the man behind the argument.

2. Person is arguing that abortion should be legalized: "Either you believe in legalizing abortion, or you're against helping victims of rape."

There are at least three points used there that don't prove his argument.

And dammit, don't make this an argument about abortion, like you made that other topic a topic about philosophy. I don't even have a stance on abortion.

I'm assuming this again is to make everyone show up as the idiots we all are and to make yourself feel better about our lack of Philisophical ability?

But it doesn't have anything to do with phiolosophy. That's why it's called "LOGIC topic".

hmm. he is saying that as long as he doesn't legalize abortion, then he's against helping rape victims.

hmm.......oh yeah, Chaos, this has nothing to do with Rai showing us we're idiots or to make him feel better. it's just so we get smarter. learning to read between the lines. and his lines are very fine....

dang, what the hell......

okay, so, like what Rai said, ARGENTUM AD HOMINEM, this guy has no real proof that the person he's bashing is against victims of rape. he's just saying it because he will not agree to the person's point of view of legalizing abortion.

right or wrong?

There's more to it than that. But it's not ad hominem because he's not attacking the person's credibility directly. Ad hominem usually involves past activity.

1. Victims of rape aren't the only ones who get abortions.

2. He is saying that there aren't any reasons to be against abortion other than being cruel and heartless. This is untrue because I could personally think of a couple of reasons that abortion shouldn't be legalized. (but this isn't a debate so I won't elaborate)

3. He doesn't allow for fence riders, people like Rai who don't have a stance on abortion.

I'm not meaning that as a stab at Rai either, just using him as an example. Besides, that one was kinda thrown out there.
