Full Version: WORST LOCALIZATION EVER
Lacrima Castle > Sting Games > Knights in the Nightmare
Dr Strum
They removed the long s.
Rhiannon
As long as I stop reading it as "I mult hurry."
LukewarmHoliday
Damnit sting people who don't care enough to understand what that S was aren't the people who are going to be playing this game for more than 1 hour to even enjoy it.
blue grim angel
Oh Sturm, you spoony bard, you.
P.P.A.
That and the replacement of the German names already makes me diſlike the tranſlation. And the game haſn't even arrived here yet.
Dr Strum
I don't intend for this to become a serious topic about the quality of the localization, but Atlus translated it as Upora. In all four versions of Riviera and Yggdra Union it was Upola.
blue grim angel
Of courle thil won't be a lerioul topic. I love lcrewing around and making jokel about ltuff like thil!

"ſ" iſn't "l" and neither is it uſed at the end of a word, as far as I remember.
aerozero
Maybe his "s" key is broken?

One of my friends broke his s key once and tried writing an essay without using it...he didn't do so well.
P.P.A.
If it is poſſible to map "ſ" to the "s" key ſomehow, I would be more than glad to know how. :|
Rhiannon
I read "possible" as "profitable."
Raijinili
I read it as poffible.

Or he could have ya know decided to replace his "s" with "l" and hope we were able to decrypt his message.

Which is a ſtupid thing to do. Why would you choose an "l" to use instead of an "ſ"? :)
blue grim angel
... It's supposed to be an f? I always saw it as an l for some reason.
P.P.A.
It looks like an "f" without the horizontal bar. Or with a smaller one. This confusion is what eventually led to its abolishment some time around WW2.
Germany still used that old font which included the "ſ" throughout the early 20th century, haha. Too bad that ended eventually. :(
H. Tsukiyono
The s thing doesn't seem like that big of a deal. :/

Changing names was probably prompted by a character-space issue, so it's not like it's as bad as I heard the localization was for the first Persona game. Although then again I haven't actually looked at the localized version so I don't know. :|
Raijinili
joke topic.

Kreimhild to Gudrun and Hildegarde to Hilgard are a few we like to attack. I can understand Hilgard somewhat, but Kreimhild to Gudrun is stupid. Aligherie to Algiery is another one we really dislike.

In before PPA proceeds to say Gudrun is a beautiful name that ANYONE WHO DOESN'T LIVE IN GERMANY DOESN'T KNOW HOW TO PRONOUNCE.
P.P.A.
*Kriemhild
Which I prefer to Gudrun by the way, primarily due to the Nibelungen saga.

Also both of the official spellings are wrong and it should be Hildegard.
Yuka
On a side note, the Phoenix Wand in this game was localized as Gladius, as per the name it has in Japanese.

We all know Gladius is a type of sword, not a wand. Furthermore, it's been localized four times prior as Phoenix Wand and not Gladius.
Raijinili
you're complaining about NAMES?

god, i remember back when people complained about changing meanings.
Yuka

It's less about names and more about Atlus translating based on nonsense.
chrishawke
Well, somebody over in Atlus had some fun.
Rhiannon
I DON'T THINK YOU REALIZE, RAI, THAT MORE EXPECTATIONS COME FOR THOSE WHO DON'T SUCK AS MUCH S OTHER COMPANIES

Plus, how many of us do you actually think have the right to complain about changes in meaning? More than half of us can't read.
Dr Strum
Changes in meanings can be subtle, and sometimes things you don't need to be able to read Japanese to recognize (for example, when they cut/retranslated the text from the banners in YUGBA).
Rhiannon
How is that a change in meaning? There's a difference between just removing something altogether and changing it to mean something else.
Dr Strum
You don't remember the millions of arguments we had over whether

because of the changed banner in the English version?
Rhiannon
I assumed Rai meant changes in meaning of DIALOGUE, rather than events.

And no, I missed all of the arguments about that.
Dr Strum
... You were a PART of those arguments. You were the one who first realized that there was indeed a difference between what was said in the different releases of the game. You created this topic afterwards to point it out and discuss it.
Rhiannon
Shh, don't tell anyone!
Hayashi Tenshi
I also wondered why they changed, Vinya to Vienna. Now everytime I see her I think of Vienna sausages... -.-
P.P.A.
Perhaps she has got a hidden stat increasing her defence against enemies of the Ottoman element that gets an increase if you transfer Warsaw's soul into her. :(
TacticalWarrior
This is stupid. The localization is excellent. No bad Grammar, nice translated cut scenes.
Don't you have anything better to complain? Names? Oh, for God's sake.
The only ones who complain about this are the ones who thinks Japanese >>>>> English and any other language.
Dr Strum
No, you'd be wrong there. People who care about continuity can also complain.

Of course, we're complaining at Sting regarding that, too.
P.P.A.
Furthermore, I for once am not complaining about Japanese names being messed with, I'm complaining about German names being made ridiculous or replaced by Nordic ones. Also the lack of long "s"s.
Leyviur
I still don't see much of the problem, there wasn't really any symbolic significance to their names, were there?

It's not like they changed Maria's name into FAG WHORE or something.
Dr Strum
I'm mostly just upset about things like "Upora Statue."
But not that upset. More like "oh Atlus... *shakes head*"
But I'm upset. Angry even. I feel like burning things.
No, no, I'm okay.
P.P.A.

I think in a few cases there was some, a handful of names were related to the legend of Siegfried the dragon slayer.
Also German is superior to any other language.
Raijinili
Didn't they change those to keep the symbolic significance?
P.P.A.
Yeah, mostly. BUT THEY AREN'T GERMAN ANY LONGER
blue grim angel
I thought Atlus tends to translate according to what they feel is most fitting, not by the exact book?

I saw something about how in Yggdra Union, there was one line that one of the tranlsators thought seemed out of character, so he changed it to suit the moment better.
Dr Strum
QUOTE

That would be the line Maragos delivered with regards to the "softening" of a line in YUGBA, but he is not representative of Atlus entirely.
blue grim angel
Alright, my bad.

Just for the record, I'm on the side that says the translation is fine. At least Atlus is also trying to fix a few screw ups they did in Yggdra. Take the Applecot Nut for example.
Dr Strum
Whether they're trying to fix things or not doesn't matter if they break other things. Again. UPORA.
