Lacrima Castle _ Books _ Books

Posted by: Dr Sturm Jan 18 2006, 08:27 PM

This thread is for discussion of books. Books you're reading, books you've read, books you're interested in, etc.
--Tom Clancy is lame--

But anyways. I'm currently reading Demons by Fyodor Dostoevsky. It's interesting, but I'm having difficulty getting into it, partially because of school, and partially because the month before I started it, I had just finished the Dark Tower series.

Posted by: valkan Jan 18 2006, 08:39 PM

Pshaw.

The writer who wrote the novelization of Halo (The Flood) is lame.

(But shouldn't this go in the *Other Forms* forum?)

Posted by: Dr Sturm Jan 18 2006, 08:40 PM

In case you didn't notice, "Other Entertainment" is a subsection of Technology.
Also, the description for this board mentions books.

Posted by: valkan Jan 18 2006, 08:43 PM

They have AUDIO books you know. Books can be considered technological.

And I frequently read books and stories on my iPod. How bout THAT, son?

Posted by: Dr Sturm Jan 18 2006, 08:46 PM

Anyone who listens to Audio Books fails at life.
There, I said it.

Posted by: valkan Jan 18 2006, 08:55 PM

Yes they do.

Posted by: fensti Jan 18 2006, 09:10 PM

Let's see, I don't read much, mainly when they force me to in school. I am being forced to read The Scarlet Letter right now. I hate this book.

Posted by: Marionette Jan 19 2006, 01:31 AM

I love Tamora Pierce. ._. And the Wyrd Trilogy saga by Robin Jarvis.

Posted by: Malice Jan 19 2006, 02:28 AM

I like the Tamora Pierce books too~! I'm reading one of her series right now.. forgot what it was called. I just called it the ' Alanna Series' (Just starting the last book) . Arn. I'm also reading Eldest by .. something Paolini. I forgot the name.
I am being fored to read 'The Last Voyage of the Scotian' at school though... Really lame about the oceans and stupid boat voyages.

Posted by: Marionette Jan 19 2006, 03:06 AM

Alanna?! You mean the Song of the Lioness Quartet?! That's my first series by her, I was your age when I read it. Its so good!!

Posted by: Raijinili Jan 19 2006, 06:36 AM

I read audio books. Straight off the tape. With my finger.

Posted by: Swifty-chan Jan 19 2006, 01:47 PM

Lioness Quartet is one of mah fav series~! XD

I don't really like the series of books after Lioness. Okay, I can accept 'Immortal Realm' and stomach 'Protector of the Small'... but no way I'm gonna buy the 'Trickster' series!

I can't stand reading another sequel series... Alanna's daughter, indeed. It's like reading a fanfic, yet it's not a fanfic ><' Tamora should stop at Lioness Quartet, IMHO.

Posted by: Rhiannon Jan 19 2006, 03:05 PM

I read a lot of books. Lately I've been interested in reading about psychology. It's interesting stuff.

Posted by: MeleMewChew Jan 19 2006, 06:15 PM

Harry Potter isn't good anymore ever since they started making the movies...

No, wait, what am i saying, the movies are bad, but the novels are good. But the movies made the story suck a little...somehow...don't know how -_-

Posted by: fensti Jan 19 2006, 09:06 PM

Harry Potter is one of the few series that I have read all of the books that have come out so far and enjoyed them in the process. When the sixth came out, I got it first day at around noon and didn't sleep until I finished it at 2:30 AM Sunday morning.

Posted by: MoloMowChow Jan 20 2006, 12:36 AM

wow...hardcore reading...

I don't think it's good to read a novel ALL at once, else it would be fun rereading it, and you could just rent it from library and save money and still read it in that same amount of time then return it and still have that 40 bucks...

Posted by: Raijinili Jan 20 2006, 05:14 AM

I read The Da Vinci Code in about 3 hours and it still sucked.

Posted by: Dr Sturm Jan 20 2006, 05:43 AM

Yes, the Da Vinci Code was lame.
And quite a few of the "facts" were mixed up...

Posted by: Swifty-chan Jan 20 2006, 02:00 PM

I finished 'Half-Blooded Prince' in 3 days, let the story sank, and flipped through the pages again.

I'm a fast reader~ XD... but I tend to miss some facts in the book. v_v'

Posted by: MeleMewChew Jan 20 2006, 02:03 PM

that's why your must take it slowly, even if it's so suspensful that you have to skim through the next few paragraphs just to find out what happens at the in...

Take things easy, and you'll enjoy it more.

Posted by: Swifty-chan Jan 20 2006, 02:05 PM

Ah well, doesn't really matter since I'd reread it.

The Song of Ice and Fire series rulez! X3

Posted by: Marionette Jan 20 2006, 06:13 PM

I'm reading Trickster, its not bad at all! I mean, yeah, Alanna's daughter wtf, but once you get past that its a pretty good read. Its not like the Lioness Quartet, but its still rather enjoyable.

Then again, I also enjoyed Protector of the Small. XD

Posted by: Malice Jan 20 2006, 11:06 PM

Hm.. a few friends are reading the Trickster ones right now.. I'm reading it after her. I've tried the Magic Circle ones, but they sucked D:

Posted by: Liger Jan 30 2006, 08:14 PM

Hmm.. My friend's making me read Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of the Ring.. I'm on chapter 2.. it begins so very SLOW. She won't shut up about how good it is though, so whatever, I'll get into it eventually.

Posted by: fensti Jan 30 2006, 09:34 PM

*sigh* I finally finished The Scarlet Letter. I hated that bloody book.

But besides that, I am going to read two books on Fermat's Last Theorem. I wonder if any of you know what that is?

Posted by: Dr Sturm Jan 30 2006, 09:44 PM

Why would you want to read a book about that fensti?
Let alone two books.

Posted by: fensti Jan 30 2006, 09:53 PM

Because I like Math, why else.

Posted by: Malice Jan 31 2006, 01:33 AM

Math... gack.
Finished Immortal series, on to Protector of the Small.
Honestly, Kel looks really... like a cow... in the cover, no offence, nya.

Posted by: fensti Jan 31 2006, 09:18 PM

ANd I am bored. That's why i read books about math.

Posted by: Raijinili Feb 1 2006, 11:12 PM

Fermat's... a theorem which he proved, but didn't write down, that says that x^a + y^a =/= z^a where x, y, and z are positive integers?

Since I figured out that the only thing that stopped me from borrowing books in the first place was worry that they would keep me from doing schoolwork, and since i knew that I was already not doing schoolwork, I read something but forgot what.

Posted by: fensti Feb 2 2006, 12:57 PM

Yep. That's what it is. A guy figured it out, and I am reading to find out about how he did it.

And to answer the question that may arrive, no, I don't have a life. :p

Posted by: Swifty-chan Feb 2 2006, 02:33 PM

I'm stuck reading the chinese novels I bought from Shanghai. 'YiRenAoShiLu' is one goddamn long series... still, it's interesting.

Posted by: Liger Feb 14 2006, 01:21 AM

I just finished Dragon Bones. It was... Interesting. It amused me, and the ending was cute XD. I may as well read the sequel and hope it amuses me as much as the first. It's an okay book, not one of my favorites, but good enough. It has it's funny parts.

Posted by: Nanashi Feb 17 2006, 10:54 PM

Well I just finished reading "The Outsiders"... Very boring beginning but it gets interesting afterwards...

Posted by: Liger Feb 17 2006, 11:38 PM

I really liked The Outsiders but yeah, it does start out rather slow.

Posted by: Malice Mar 24 2006, 09:14 PM

I'm reading the Narina series right now. IT'S VERY UNINTERESTING.

Posted by: Swiyth Mar 27 2006, 02:54 PM

JOOOOY TO THE WORLD, CHAINFIRE'S HERE!!
THIS MEANS, I GET, TO REAAAAAAAAD,
OH HOW I WAITED FOR THIS DAY,
SO I COULD STAND AND PROUDLY SAY
THAT IIIIIIIIII LOOOOOOOOOVE BOOOOOOOOOKS!!!

thank you!! thank you!!!!

i mean...er....whoopa! :D

Posted by: Swifty-chan Mar 28 2006, 01:18 PM

Narnia, eh? I read the first 2 books and got bored in the middle of reading the 3rd one. So, I stop reading.

Posted by: lightningdude Mar 29 2006, 02:15 PM

I need to find a good book to read, lately I've just been reading magazines. I would like to read Monster by Frank Peretti, but I'm not paying $25 to read a book that I might read twice. Waiting until it comes out in a library.

Posted by: Liger Mar 29 2006, 10:12 PM

I'm currently reading A Gracious Plenty by Sheri Reynolds. It's actually pretty good.

Posted by: Dr Sturm Mar 31 2006, 01:32 PM

Went to Barnes and Noble last night, bought a shitton of books. I'm reading "The Wanting Seed" (by Anthony Burgess, the same guy behind "A Clockwork Orange"). Only the second page and it's already farking depressing as hell...

Posted by: Swifty-chan Mar 31 2006, 03:34 PM

I have to read 'The River Between' by Ngu... something for Literature class... *sigh* It looks boring. Damnit, I'd rather stick with 'Lord of the Flies'.

Posted by: Raijinili Apr 1 2006, 02:51 AM

Chainfire? As in Sword of Truth?

Sword of Truth is just an anti-Communist one-sided political commentary with a little sex thrown in and not enough actual MAGIC.

Posted by: Dr Sturm Apr 6 2006, 04:29 PM

Ugh, this book is horrible.
Well, not the book, the characters. They're just so... so evil!

Posted by: Ultimaninja Apr 7 2006, 11:04 PM

Ok the list of books I am reading:
1. Night (Clas requirement)
2. The Art of Ninjutsu (Do books on training in ninjutsu count?)

Posted by: Yourself Apr 10 2006, 12:18 AM

Lets see,

I just finished The Tale of Genji (FECKING BORING) and started reading the Earthsea (now a quartet!) books.

I'm also reading some Asimov as well.

Posted by: Liger Apr 24 2006, 09:26 PM

I'm reading Going Postal and The Color of Magic (both by Terry Pratchett)

haha, I love them both so far.

Posted by: Dr Sturm May 11 2006, 06:57 AM

Finally finished The Wanting Seed now that finals are over.
Great book. The ending was a little... Oversentimental. But otherwise, awesome book, funny, mortifying, etc.
My sig happens to be from the book.
Next I'll read... Something. I'll decide this week sometime. Then I'll tell you all.

Posted by: Swiyth May 11 2006, 09:02 AM

in the past month, i finished Chainfire (part something of the Sword of Truth Series), World of Warcraft: Cycle of Hatred, Hitchhiker's Guide to The Galaxy:Mostly Harmless and a reread of some other book.

Posted by: fensti May 11 2006, 10:45 PM

I'm reading "Of Mice and Men" for school right now. It's ok. Could be better. I'm just glad it's short and I don't have to write a paper on it.

Posted by: Dr Sturm May 11 2006, 11:24 PM

I saw that book at B&N today. <_<
Yes, I went today, and came home with several books.
Don't know what I'm going to read first. Probably Burgess's Honey for the Bears or McCarthy's Blood Meridian.

Posted by: Malice May 11 2006, 11:48 PM

I'm trying to read a series of unfortunate events, but it's really boring... stopped at page 21 of book two. :[
SOOOO I'm reading the third book of Pendragon. Spader is awesome. <3

Posted by: Rhiannon May 12 2006, 12:15 AM

I tried to read that, too, Malice. But I stopped after reading the first chapter in the first book. Everything about that book angers me. Well, I don't think it's actually the book at all. The book is just boring. But I hate the author.

Posted by: Liger May 12 2006, 01:06 AM

Yeah, I stopped after the first chapter of the first book of a Series of Unfortunate Events too. The book wasn't too interesting (although I knew quite a few people who would disagree).

Ohhh Malice Dear?

Fanfiction stuff belong's in the fanfiction section.

*pokes*

But all is forgiven. Just do it in the future.

Posted by: Rzul May 13 2006, 01:57 AM

i am reading the left behind series, currently on book 9, Desecration.

Posted by: Liger May 14 2006, 03:48 AM

Just finished To Kill a Mockingbird (for shcool). It actually isn't all that bad.

Posted by: Dr Sturm May 14 2006, 03:58 AM

Ugh, I HATED To Kill A Mockingbird.
The only book I ever hated.

Posted by: Endless May 14 2006, 04:38 AM

To Kill a Mockingbird was the only book that I was supposed to read in school that just refused to. We had just finished Lord of the Flies, which I absolutely hated, and I never quite liked being assigned to read specific books for school. I figured that since I had seen the movie of To Kill a Mockingbird a few years back, I would be able to breeze through most of the tests without having to read it. I didn't take into account my atrocious memory.

Posted by: Liger May 14 2006, 05:19 AM

I didn't think it was -that- bad. Or maybe I just have a high tolerance for boring things. *thinks back to Harry Potter* Never mind.

Posted by: Nanashi May 16 2006, 08:04 AM

2001: A Spcae Odyssey by Arthur C. Clarke.. it's somewhat good so far...even though I just only finished the first chapter...

Posted by: Liger May 19 2006, 03:12 AM

Now reading All Quiet on the Western Front for school. There's this one part where a horse's guts fall out and it trips and falls on them. Lovely. Just... lovely.

Posted by: Dr Sturm May 19 2006, 03:35 AM

Sounds hawt.
Anyways, I don't think I posted, but I went with Blood Meridian.
Even sexier than the scene Liger just described.

Posted by: Liger May 31 2006, 11:05 PM

Sounds great. Reading The Edge on the Sword and Fatalis. I haven't started The Edge on the Sword yet, but Fatalis is very boring.

Posted by: Rzul Jun 1 2006, 03:48 AM

I'm reading something called Shogun Pt. 1...seems interesting enough, only read the first 4 chapters though.

Posted by: Yourself Jun 4 2006, 10:55 PM

I just finished this random "science fiction" book called Doorways in the Sand, by Roger Zelazny. It was really random and hard to gather the entirety of the story.

Lately I've been poking around my dads science fiction bookshelf looking for new things to read. Still deciding what book to read next.

Posted by: Liger Jul 19 2006, 05:39 PM

>_>

I just finished Inkheart, by Cornelia Funke. I liked it.

Reading the sequel, Inkspell now.

Posted by: Ultimaninja Jul 19 2006, 07:23 PM

The last book I read...Do Grimms Fairy tales count?

In my high school english class we had to read children stories.
Do I need to say more? Yes, Yes I do.

Well I chose the most horrific story and scared my entire class...well the girls mostly.

I didn't even get to win the award of reading the story to the 1st graders...*cries*

Posted by: Yourself Jul 20 2006, 12:11 AM

Reading Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson for the second time, its still a really good read.

Posted by: Jomei Jul 20 2006, 05:15 AM

Some of my favorites... Cat's Cradle, 1984, Mother Night, The Stranger, and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

Posted by: fensti Jul 20 2006, 01:15 PM

Reading the first book of The Once and Future King and The Murder of Roger Ackroyd for summer reading project.

At least I like this year's books. >>

Posted by: Carnivorous Sheep Jul 20 2006, 11:46 PM

Once and Future King drags on and on too much, it has a good plot but White complicates it too much...

And it's still just another retell of King Arthur, nothing too special there.

My favorite book would probably be Lord of the Rings

Favorite Series: Ender's Shadow Series.

And I really like crazy Chinese books by JinYong XD

Posted by: Raijinili Jul 22 2006, 04:49 AM

Marion Zimmer Bradley. She doesn't completely irritate me, which is a big plus.

Posted by: Rzul Aug 15 2006, 08:59 PM

I'm reading the most bonechilling vampire novel ever- "Salem's Lot". This is one of Steven King's best novels from what I can infer.

I'm also reading a fantasy novel called "The Fifth Ring"

Posted by: Marionette Aug 15 2006, 09:01 PM

Currently reading "The Thief Lord", its pretty interesting. The English is rather plain though.

Posted by: Carnivorous Sheep Aug 15 2006, 09:59 PM

The Thief Lord was pretty interesting. The ending parts, both in plot and style, change pretty drastically from what you've gotten used to throughout the book.

Posted by: Raijinili Aug 16 2006, 04:13 AM

Strangely enough, I liked a children's book called "The Thief". Who wrote "The Thief Lord"?

Posted by: Carnivorous Sheep Aug 17 2006, 03:34 AM

Cornelia Funke, if memory serves, author of Inkspell, Inkheart, and Dragon Rider.

Posted by: Seans Aug 17 2006, 09:14 PM

My most recent book that I have read would have to be "Oliver Twist". However, I rarely remember the names of books that I have read. Odd...

Posted by: whoyodaddy Aug 17 2006, 11:35 PM

hmm..... books ive read. if mangas dont count then. "Beauty and Evil: the case of Leni Riefensthal's Triumph of the Will" was a pretty intresting read.

Posted by: Shadow Aug 18 2006, 01:54 AM

"Othello" was the last one I readed.

Posted by: Raijinili Aug 25 2006, 02:09 PM

You managed to miss two whole letters.

Posted by: Malice Aug 25 2006, 04:21 PM

:[Rai... I've read The Thief Lord and did a book report about it in grade 6.. -__-

Currently reading some mangas (yotsuba and airgear) and this book called "Nine Days Queen".

Posted by: Yourself Aug 30 2006, 10:53 PM

Reading a nice fat book by the name of The Alienist by Caleb Carr. It's a great romp in the gritty streets of 1896's New York.

I'm now reading Farenheit 451.

Posted by: Raijinili Aug 31 2006, 10:22 PM

The manga's official name is "Othello", even in Japan.

Posted by: Shadow Aug 31 2006, 11:14 PM

I was talking about the Shakespeare book.

Posted by: Ultimaninja Sep 1 2006, 12:34 AM

Pretty good.

Shadow, it's spelled "Othello" in Shakespeare.

Not in Argentina.
Meh, I'm editing the other post to make you people happy.

Posted by: Raijinili Sep 4 2006, 07:28 PM

That's like going to an Italian board and insisting that the name is spelled "Christopher Columbus".

Posted by: Liger Sep 4 2006, 07:32 PM

Just started The Legend of Luke by Brian Jacques. Gee. I've had this book for a few years now and I haven't read it yet.

Posted by: Ultimaninja Sep 4 2006, 11:15 PM

His books are awsome, but Taggerung is a personal Favorite...

although the Outcast of Redwall wasn't that great imo

Posted by: Liger Sep 5 2006, 11:02 PM

Yeah, Taggerung was pretty good.

I just started a bunch of Terry Pratchett's books, I haven't finished The Legend of Luke yet, though.

Reading: Feet of Clay, Interesting Times, The Last Continent, and The Legend of Luke.

I'll finish them all... eventually XD

Posted by: Raijinili Sep 7 2006, 04:14 AM

Looking for Terry Pratchett. I liked the Postal book.

Posted by: Seans Sep 10 2006, 11:01 PM

The title of the book is Mr. Simple.
Although it's not such a simple book after all.

Oracle's Queen by Lynn something..

Pretty disgusting and I don't understand much since it's the third book. Reminds me of the Song of the Lioness series though. :/

Posted by: Ultimaninja Sep 16 2006, 02:39 AM

what are the 1st two called?

Posted by: Raijinili Sep 16 2006, 05:56 AM

I didn't really take the time to enjoy Their Eyes. Suffice it to say that the main character matures.

Posted by: Dr Sturm Sep 28 2006, 02:35 AM

Currently reading "Justine" by Lawrence Durrell. Apparently part of a four-book series.
I really like the writing style so far, but I can already tell, less than four pages in, that the book is going to be entirely about sex.

Posted by: Rhiannon Nov 16 2006, 08:16 PM

I never told any of you what I was reading. Because I don't like any of you but I love you all or something like that. Anyway, I finished Lullaby by Chuck Palahniuk. You should know who he is, he's cool. It's a good book. :(

Reading a collection of poems by Edgar Allen Poe, Don Quixote, and Lord of the Flies.

Posted by: fensti Nov 17 2006, 04:35 AM

Let's see...

I had to read Brave New World earlier this school year, and I thought it was an excellent book. I also believe that the topic of it would interest Sturm greatly. Sex and drugs. <_<

Right now I have to read "The Knight's Tale" in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, which I will have to write a paper on and make a speech on it in December.

At least I can take this year's Lit stuff. I like British Literature.

Posted by: Desu Nov 21 2006, 12:59 AM

I hardly read books.
I only read when school requires.
So next year I must read To kill a mockingbird for literature

Posted by: Malice Nov 21 2006, 01:59 AM

Ireadpicturebooks:D

Reading the Serpent's Egg book and Eragon.

Posted by: Desu Nov 21 2006, 04:22 AM

Haha...picture books...

I read them. Alot. About 12 years ago

Posted by: Sauce XIV Nov 27 2006, 10:58 PM

Books, eh? Currently I'm having to read To Kill a Mockingbird, like Desu, for school reasons. It pisses me off; I've already read this book once.

Aside from that, I'm reading Lirael.

Posted by: Rune_Ocarina Dec 1 2006, 02:28 AM

Posted by: Dr Sturm Dec 1 2006, 02:29 AM

No.

Posted by: Aekari Dec 3 2006, 07:37 PM

A majority of the things I read are for school.

At the present, I'm reading Hamlet and The Aeneid (in Latin) for school, and the Snorra Edda in my free time...

I also spend some time on the internet reading in Latin (my last undertaking was Saxo Grammaticus' Gesta Danorum), but that's not in published form, so that doesn't count. Meh.

Posted by: Rune_Ocarina Dec 4 2006, 10:28 PM

Then the only actually book I've read and had an intrest to were the Halo novels. Really good books to read to if you want to know Before/In-between/ and After the latest game.

Currently reading Furies of Calderon by Jim Butcher, though I have half the mind to halt and read Eragon instead. I wanna finish it before the movie comes out. ><'

The movie will suck. :<

Anyway, Reread some more Prattchet stuff. Hogfather in particular.

I don't read much books.
But my favourite I've read so far is A child called It

Posted by: Liger Dec 16 2006, 05:40 AM

Still reading Macbeth. And then doing all this movie... analyzation stuff. Boring. The movies we're watching on Macbeth in school are pretty weird.

The Two Towers (Lord of the Rings, J. R. R. Tolkien). It's ok, I guess. I'm not really liking it much more than the first book, but it's not bad.

A large collection of poems and short stories by Edgar Allan Poe.

Don Quixote. I... can't seem to keep myself focused on reading this.

When taking a break from all my Calculus textbooks I have to read for school, I like to sit back and delve into some nice fantasy novels. My friends can testify to my obsession with Brian Jacques "Redwall" series, as well as Harry Potter books and .Hack// Mangas and Novels. I seriously think that my bookshelf is going to collapse under the weight of all my novels and textbooks someday.

Posted by: Deamond Dec 19 2006, 05:57 PM

Were reading "Death of a salesman" in english, and Schillers "die Räuber" in German lesson.... They both suck....

I normaly don't read books, but I love to read fanfictions *lol*

I had the most overpowering urge to reread The Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy lately. Whoo.

Currently alternating between Boris Akunin's Turkish Gambit and P.G. Wodehouse's Stiff Upper Lip, Jeeves!. Two totally different genres, but each book superb in its own right.

Moving Pictures - Terry Pratchett.

Again. Whats with my discworld whoring atm?

Posted by: Martel Jan 28 2007, 03:41 PM

Well, one of my top favorite books are 'A Great and Terribly Beauty' and its sequel 'Rebel Angels' by Libba Bray (or Brey? I don't remember. .__.). They're really great! I honestly don't read too much, but when I do, it's usually those fat books with 400+ pages. xD;

Posted by: aerozero Jan 28 2007, 07:56 PM

My favorite books are Tales of Two Cities, Lord of the Flies, .hack//Another Birth, and Les Miserables. I would never had gone within a 1000 miles of Les Miserables (it's 1400 pages long -_-), but the unabridged version was assigned for a summer assignment.

Never try reading a 1400 page book 2 weeks before school is suppose to start, it was hell for me (this was before I discovered Sparknotes). But the story was good, I recommend reading the abridged version to avoid all the uneccessary history Victor Hugo put in his uncensored version.

Currently, I'm suppose to be reading the Fountainhead for my English class, but I'm going to sparknote it. I regret taking this class so much, my counselour "forgot" to mention that Film Analysis was an English class...

Posted by: Dr Sturm Jan 28 2007, 08:24 PM

Well. On the subject of favourites, I think my favourite book might be the one I posted about not too long ago, The Wanting Seed.
Never really had a book I would consider a favourite before that.

Still progressing through Justine. On part three! Of the first book of four!
Crap. Fucking school gets in the way of everything. But I'm reading stories I actually like for my English class, for once. AND I MIGHT HAVE FOUND A POET WHO WRITES STUFF I ACTUALLY LIKE: Anna Akhmatova. Just read two of her poems ("The First Long-Range Artillery Shell in Leningrad" and "I Am Not One of Those Who Left the Land..."), and I quite enjoyed them.

Posted by: Sauce XIV Jan 28 2007, 08:28 PM

Not reading anything for school for once. For pleasure, however, I'm reading Philip Pullman's The Subtle Knife, which isn't all that bad of a story. Takes a large amount of previous information from the previous book, but it's pretty good.

Les Miserables, from what I've heard, is pretty good, actually. I'll check it out eventually.

Posted by: Raijinili Jan 29 2007, 01:47 PM

Reading Mercedes Lackey's "Aerie".

Posted by: Liger Feb 2 2007, 12:07 AM

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and all those other stories related to it. Damn schoolwork. I never have the time to actually enjoy any sort of out of school reading because of all the schoolwork, so I'm having a hard time actually getting into the book. It is quite funny, though.

Posted by: Christophen Feb 2 2007, 02:54 AM

I'm mainly interested in the sci-fi and fantasy genres, and tend to lean towards storylines where corruption plays a major role in the plot.

My favorite book series so far has been The DragonLance Saga (fantasy). I rather liked Tolkien's works, as well. Hebert's Dune was interesting, but I've yet to read the other books in the series.

I've recently read The Kingpriest Trilogy by Christopher Pierson, which I found to be quite fascinating.

But my favorite book of all time is the Washington Manual of Medical Therapeutics! Awesome stuff there.

Posted by: Liger Feb 21 2007, 10:50 PM

Currently reading Wintersmith (by Terry Pratchett, who is now officially my favorite author. Ever.)

Also reading Relic by... argh. I don't remember the authors. There are two. I'm too lazy to look for the book, right now. But it's a good book. I believe the sequel(?) is called Reliquary or something. I probably spelled that wrong. Anyways, I plan on picking that up once I finish what I'm reading now xD.

Just read "Hello, Groin" by Beth Goobie (one of my favorite authors). It was so cute and the characters were really likable. ^_^ Plus it was about books and freedom of speech and yuri, which are always good topics.

Also read "Angels & Demons", finally. It was cool, but I liked "Da Vinci Code" better. The last scene was total Bond and kinda clashed with the rest of the story...

I've recently finished Hamlet. I love Shakespeare~
And, even though I haven't read the play, I'm watching the video directed by Tom Stoppard modeled after his play that uses two of Hamlet's Characters... Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead. It's so great~

Thursday, I finished reading Life of Pi, by Yann Martel. The book, twas beautiful. The story, oh the story, it makes me laugh, cry, feel anger, it's so awesome IMO.

Posted by: Liger May 13 2007, 03:09 AM

FINALLY finished Catcher in the Rye. Flkghf. I hate this book. Like. I HATE this book. The only parts that mildly amused me were the bellboy pimp and that part where Holden was describing that French lady, or something. FRANSH LADY. Anyways. I didn't like this book. Although (as far as school books go) I'd say it wasn't as bad as Mary Reilly. Which read like a bad fanfiction in book form. Ok. It WAS a bad fanfiction in book form. The only book I hated more than Mary Reilly was A Seperate Peace. But only because A Seperate Peace dragged onnnn and onnnnnnn. It was well written, yes. But I found myself dozing off in the middle of a few of the chapters.

Anyways. Enough complaining. I'm also reading Dante's Equation by Jane Jenson. I like it so far. Some of the chapters are mildly boring, but a few of the characters amuse me to no end.

Posted by: Buddhu23 May 13 2007, 04:05 PM

I liked ASP... Of course, back when I actually read it, I didn't really care one way or the other, but, looking back on it...I really do like it. I really want to read The Brothers K, but I ran out of time during the school year. Oh well, i'll just have to add it to my summer list~

Posted by: Liger May 14 2007, 12:59 AM

It wasn't horrible. It was very well written, I'll give you that. But we seriously analyzed it to death. I think spending 2 classes analyzing four pages is pretty much my limit. We. Spent. Two. Weeks. On SIX PAGES. I absolutely hated the book after that. It's like Robert Frost poems. Very pretty, very well written. But something that tends to get the life analyzed out of it (Death! I took a two month long poetry elective. We spent one and a half months analyzing three of his poems. Ugh.)

And the first few chapters seemed to drag on endlessly. It was much better towards the end.

Posted by: Buddhu23 May 14 2007, 01:03 AM

Sometimes, teachers do that. We spent an eternity on Emily Dickinson. Her poems are okay and all, but I can't stand going through them for over 1.5 weeks >>

Just got out some new stuff. Mmm. ^_^

"Goddess of the Rose" by P.C. Cast was really adorable. Gave me lots of inspiration for my YU OTP, yus. Feminists and romance/fantasy fans will like that.

"Scar Night" by Alan Campbell was FAWESOME. *_* I really can't believe it's his first novel. And this from one of the guys who worked on Grand Theft Auto!! It is sooo coool. You must read it. If only because one of the main characters (Carnival) is sort of like...

Like...

Hmm.

Carnival = Malice + Nessiah + steroids

I finished Dune, and I liked it a lot, so I bought Dune Messiah and Children of Dune.

But instead of reading those, I'm reading House of Leaves. I think it's neat. Well, except for the references to nonexistant books. I keep forgetting that they don't exist so I waste time trying to look up information about them.

Posted by: Dr Sturm May 23 2007, 10:45 PM

I finally finished Lawrence Durrell's Justine and am thoroughly depressed, don't know what I'm going to read next; the next book in the series (Balthazar), Pouliuli, or one of the many other books I intended to read when I purchased them but will likely never get to.

Anyways, a little info on how the book is written if anyone decides to read it, taken as a direct quote from one of the characters in the book: "Things do not all lead forward to other things: some lead backwards to things which have passed. A marriage of past and present with the flying multiplicity of the future racing towards one." (Pursewarden)

Posted by: Liger May 24 2007, 09:07 PM

Looks interesting, Sturm. Maybe I'll look for it at the library next time I go.

Currently reading The Glass Menagerie (Tennessee Williams). Gaaaads. I haven't read enough of this book(/play) to really say what I think. Currently? I don't really like it much. It's... odd. But maybe later on.... :\

Maybe you can finish it in a quicker time than the eight months it took me. X/

I decided I'd read Mikhail Bulgakov's The Master and Margarita next; a little comedy before I continue with the Alexandrian Quartet (the series Justine belongs to). Before you accuse me of trying to appear smarter than I am by reading complex, obscure books, I discovered this book through a song by The Lawrence Arms, so, yeah. Anyways, it is quite comical; the devil is very interestingly portrayed, so are the events of Jesus' life, though I have no idea how this is all going to tie together...

Stolen from Family Guy.

And The Eyes of the Dragon is not a collection of short stories, nor is it horror so your stolen quote is unwarranted.

First of all, I never took credit for making up that quote. Yes, your right. Family Guy did say that....maybe thats why I said it.

Crap. Your right>_> I was thinking of a different book. I had also recently read The eyes of the Dragon.
It was called " Night Shift", or something like that.

I just finished Against the Tide by John Ringo. Never heard of the guy before, but the book wasn't half bad--though there were a few plot holes, I sort of got how the universe there worked along the way, which is more or less how sci-fi work usually goes. It's a quick read, five hundred forty-seven pages--I killed about two hours with it. Apparently it's part of a series, but it seems I've started from the middle.

If it is I want to add my AP Psychology textbook, which by the way tries a little too hard to be "reader friendly." I literally have to dig through it with a pickaxe to get anything useful out of it.

Even though it gives me nightmares I also reread "The Haunting of Alaizabel Cray." It's not a bad book, just that apparently my imagination is a little more overactive than I thought it was.

Posted by: aerozero Jun 24 2007, 06:31 AM

I finished the hitchhiker's books over the summer, and I thought they were really good.

Finished Harry Potter from 3 days ago. Ending is... meh.

Started reading the Maximum Ride series. Currently on the The Angel Experiment.

Hehe. The Maximum Ride series isn't really all that brainpower-intensive, but it's a fun read. =D

Hmm... I went back and re-read Kushiel's Chosen, just for fun. ._.;; Even though I have no time to read.

Beowulf - Heaney Translation. One. Bigass. Poem. Can't say I'm having a miserable time reading it, but I'm not really getting into it either, honestly.

Well, I finished Susan Fromberg Schaeffer's Wacky Vietnam Adventure, and I can honestly say that I have no idea what the ending was all about.

Oh, and I've got a stack of Tom Clancy books that I'll probably start reading.

I'm rereading The Haunted after browsing and bumping into Guts again.

3rd one is pretty memorable.

"the narrator describes an incident in which he sat on the water intake at the bottom of a swimming pool while masturbating. The suction caused his rectum and lower intestines to prolapse and become tangled in the filter, forcing the narrator to gnaw through his own innards in order to free himself and avoid drowning. The narrator's sister later becomes impregnated by semen deposited by the narrator in the pool, which results in her having an abortion.

I'm reading Sick Puppy right now for a couple of laughs.

Because I'm working on Dum Spiro Spero and that's heavily magic-centric, I decided to "find" Roswell and Nessiah's characters by looking at similar magic-addicted mages. And dug out my Dragonlance books, starting with The Soulforge, to read some Raistlin for reference.

...and, dear God, he's invaded my brain and won't leave me alone.

Now switched over to Stephenie Meyer's Twilight trilogy in hopes of getting overly snarky lich-infested mages unstuck from my consciousness.

Illium (by Dan Simmons)- Sci-Fi/Fantasy, Main character is a Genetically Reconstructed human (who was once a History Teacher on the "Illiad") and in the service of the Olympian 'Gods' to make sure that History is going as planned (It is an exact reconstruction by the quantumblah-distorting gods in a future century). He messes with the events of the Illiad and ends up turning the Trojans and invading Greeks against the 'Gods.' At the end of the novel he discovers that events taking palce are on a terra-formed Mars. (The heroes of the "illiad" are genetically-enhanced humans, due to the Intercession between humans and 'gods'; Zeus almost nukes everyone and Ares gets his intestines ripped out by Achilles). Meanwhile on Earth, 'post-humans' are relatively inept people (as they do not read or write, anymore), and live until they are exactly 100. Each time they reach a year that is a multiple of 20, (ie. 20, 40, 60, 80) they are sent up to the "rings" and retruned as their 20-year old self; at 100 they do not return. When a small group of them try and discover why, their robotic servants turn on them and try to kill them. Meanwhile (again) small androids/robots from the outer planets of the solar system try to discoverwhy there are so many quantum anomalies in the last couple centuries, (due to the activity on Mars and Earth; Mars mostly as the Gods make use of Quantum Teleportation etc.)

Olympos (by Dan Simmons) - Sequel to the Above. Main character continues his fight against the 'Gods.' Meanwhile, the gods fight amongst themselves and about half of them are killed in the unsuing fight. (Hera is blasted into smithereens by Zeus, her scorched body parts literally fall out of the sky; Thetis is shot through the heart; Posieden is thrown into Tartarus by Zeus; Apollo gets a lobotomy via spearhit). All three points of the previous stories come together (androids, post humans and humans of Mars). Zeus gets killed by Achilles; (Since Achilles can only die to exact circumstances, he is invicible otherwise) Achilles Impales Zeus on Odysseus' Bed- post, decapitates him, and feeds his still-living intestines to Odysseus' Dog. Great stuff eh?

oh and I laughed when I read about Rastlin, He's a funny character (albeit completely obssessed with his magic...). I've read a majority of the DragonLance books so...

Palahniuk has a way with words to sort of get the visceral across (perhaps literally, sometimes), but I never could bring myself to finish The Haunted. I think I stopped trying to read it shortly after Lady Bag Lady commits suicide.

Although Guts' commentary on where people's college money goes instead of college is somewhat entertaining.

What am I actually reading right now? I should have finished Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad already, but I haven't. And watching Apocalypse Now for the group English project about Heart of Darkness has done little to improve my reluctance to finish it.

Ah, not so many people here read books, eh?

I read all the Harry Potter books because I'm such a darned fan.
I also read The Kite Runner last month for my book report in Literature. cried like a baby.

Currently, I'm trying to absorb the words of 'The Scarlet Letter' by Nathaniel Hawthorne. *having a major nosebleed*

I NEED books! They're a great way to escape the crappiness of reality.

The Deathly Hallows put me off Harry Potter entirely...she killed off practically the entire cast, and left half of the annoying characters alive...although I was glad to see Colin Creevey turn up in the body count. Hedwig was unneccessary, though. And, as for the ending...well, even I could write a better ending than that, and my fanfiction isn't worth mentioning. "Albus Severus" indeed...

At the moment, I'm re-reading Rise of a Merchant Prince, part two of Raymond E. Feist's Serpentwar Saga. I can't say I really like Roo Avery as a character, but its actually quite a good book on the whole...

I'm over my Deathly Hallows disappointment. I tried not to think of the crappy epilogue but focused on the little fact that
