Lacrima Castle _ Introductions and Departures _ Its sad how dead this whole forum and the dept. heaven series is

Posted by: balamea Nov 17 2018, 06:31 PM

Im a new guy here, found the forum while searching for people actively discussing yggdra union. Ive really fallen in love with the game lately. Im a sucker for jrpgs that arent just 4 units aligned next to each other fighting 4 other monsters (except in the case of breath of fire 3). I wish there were more games like these still around.
I miss old rpgs using pixelart graphics, they were so gorgeous, at least there are indie games out there coming out that kind of imitate that type of style, like delta rune, ikenfell, wargroove. If anyone sees this and wants to have a chat about rpgs, hit me up

Dept. Heaven are the only JRPGs I'll probably ever play. I hope Sting wakes up soon and realizes they need to continue this series. Apparently they make mobile games now?
Anyway, welcome.

Sure, my schedule is about to free up for a long time, I could use some good games to play.

Sorry for the late response, was busy. My first recommendation is something more similar to the setting and gameplay of Dept. Heaven games, the final fantasy tactics series. There are three installments, fft, Ffta and ffta2, I've only played Ffta and ffta2 tho, I highly recommend this series, it has the setting of the final fantasy universe, but gameplay more similar to a typical srpg, but still with it's own twists, it's class and race system is one of the coolest that I've ever seen in an srpg and the way that you learn new skills is very unique too, you get new skills by getting new equipment, after having played enough battlefields with the equipment on, it will be made permanent in your class skills list. You can even have a secondary skill list from a another class on the same character. The games can be very short if you want to, but extremely long too if you want all the classes and missions completed.

My second recommendation is the valkyria Chronicles series, the first installment (and arguably the best one when it comes to plot and visuals) you can play on the PS3, but if you don't own one, you can play the second and third one (third one doesn't have an official translation, but a fan translation that is very well made), I can't describe this game very well because it's not the typical type of srpg that most people know. Just look some gameplay of it up on YouTube and you will see if it meets your taste, have fun

although the final fantasy tactics games are absolutely great, I wouldn't really call them unique. They helped codify/define what strategy rpg's are nowadays, almost like the backbone of a lot of them.

Now, if you DO want a unique srpg, you could check out Phantom Brave. You play as a little girl who summons dead spirits to fight for her, and you summon them by placing their souls in objects around the battlefield, with them getting stat bonuses depending on the object they're summoned through. This is a very simple explanation for a very complicated game that I haven't touched in probably seven or eight years, so there's a good chance I'm even getting stuff wrong lol. Still, it's up there in 'unique' to me.

EDIT ALSO welcome to the forums both of you. Although LCN is well past a dead board, a handful of the older users still periodically check it, even if they never actually post anything. I try to post something at least two or three times a year, even if it's just updating what I've been playing and reading over the last few months. Speaking of...

We sure are dead. But don't worry, I just paid for the domain for two more years so it'll be dead for at least that much longer.

I also second Valkyria Chronicles and Phantom Brave (and add for Phantom Brave that you can also pick up any of those objects and use them as weapons, and, of course, they have a variety of stat changes and special attacks as equipment... plus it's one of only three SRPGs I know of that have free movement rather than grid movement).

Is Shining Force Feather another?

Aren't the uh growlanser(?) games free movement? Also Vandal Hearts I think. I've never played either just seems like I remember them being like that.

Vandal Hearts is very much griddy.

I was actually thinking of Rebirth Moon (which nobody will ever play if not even II could play it for more than one sitting) and Makai Kingdom (which apparently was actually grid?).

But yeah sure Shining Force Feather, and I think whichever Growlanser PSP game was at least, as were games like Generation of Chaos 6 (and probably earlier ones) and the one YU game for DS where you had to figure out what Japan's stroke order for Arabic letters was if you wanted to do well.
