Lacrima Castle _ Music _ Anathema

Posted by: Dr Sturm Oct 11 2006, 05:26 AM

Alright, bitches, you knew this was coming.
Well, maybe not, but whether you do or don't, I feel bad for any of you who do not know them. :(

Anyways, I don't know what to say about them without sounding like a rabid fangirl, which I suppose I am. At least for Anathema. So, instead, I'll give a little information on them, and then a bunch of links from where you can sample much of their music.

History
Anathema formed at the beginning of the nineties under the name Pagan Angel, but eventually ditched that name and released a few demos, and then signed to Peaceville records. They released three albums, pioneering the Doom/Death sound alongside biggies such as My Dying Bride and Paradise Lost before their first major change-up; their original vocalist, Darren White, left the band (rumoured to have been kicked out of the band, but he went on to form The Blood Divine, then, most recently, Seretonal). Instead of finding a new one, Vincent Cavanagh took on vocal duties alongside guitar. They released some new albums on Peaceville, each one straying further and further from their orginial sound, swapping members in and out, switching labels twice, getting fucked out of a contract by MTVUK, and then being dropped by their most recent label. They remain unsigned with their current lineup of Vincent, Daniel and Jamie Cavanagh, Les Smith and John Douglas. They continue to make music, posting it on their website, as they continue to try and find a new label.

Discograpy
I'm not including demos and singles and compilations and DVDs and shit like most lists do. (Except Hindsight in which all the songs are remade and thus DIFFERENT.)

Except the last four, all of these have been re-released, most with bonus tracks and videos, so they're not hard to find if you were to want them.

The last one's not completely legal, but I'm trying to get more people into Anathema, and few are willing if they have to go search and download.

Anyways, best band ever, check them out. <3

Posted by: Chaos Seraph Oct 11 2006, 03:15 PM

Took you long enough. xp

Fantastic band though, but I miss Darren's vocals somewhat. Vincent's good, but he just isn't the same.

Posted by: Dr Sturm Oct 11 2006, 03:38 PM

My only real problem with Darren leaving is that Ruth seemed to follow him. :/
Not that Lee Douglas is bad or anything.

I do wonder, however, what Anathema's post-Pentecost III albums would have sounded like had Darren not left. Would songs like "One Last Goodbye" and "Lost Control" even exist...?

But, then again, after checking out some Seretonal, I don't really like Darren's clean vocals too much.

Posted by: Chaos Seraph Oct 11 2006, 03:50 PM

Well, yeah, his clean were awful compared to Vincents, but Vince can't really growl that well at all. It balances I guess.

I have started liking their more recent stuff a lot more as of late though, I was primarily into the pre Eternity stuff before.

Posted by: Dr Sturm Oct 11 2006, 04:16 PM

Same here, really. Although, I would have said everything prior to Judgement I loved, everything including and beyond I just liked, but "A Simple Mistake" made me reexamine their later albums, and I'm actually thinking A Fine Day to Exit is probably my favourite. :X

It does have one of the three songs that introduced me to Anathema...

Posted by: Chaos Seraph Oct 11 2006, 04:22 PM

Pulled Under at 2000 Metres a Second is awesome. =p

Though it was A Fine Day To Exit and Pressure ( The music video is surprisingly good ) that got me into the later stuff.

Posted by: Dr Sturm Oct 11 2006, 04:38 PM

Yes, it is awesome. And the music video for "Pressure" is surprisingly good. It's definitely far superior to their other music videos. <_<

"Leave No Trace," "Wings of God" and "One Last Goodbye" were the songs that first got me into Anathema. Then, a few months later... (*cough*) I checked out a few more. "Angelica" and "The Silent Enigma (Orchestral)" made me download a torrent of their discography. I found more than enough songs off each album to make me start buying them.

Posted by: Shadow Oct 11 2006, 07:00 PM

http://search.blogger.com/?as_q=Anathema&ie=UTF-8&ui=blg&bl_url=aris-music.blogspot.com&x=0&y=0 are some albums.
I've downloaded A Fine Day to Exit, Alternative 4, Judgement, Eternity (and Serenades, but was horrible).

Posted by: Rhiannon Oct 11 2006, 07:22 PM

Aw... I liked Serenades. Mostly because of Lovelorn Rhapsody, but still!

My favourite album from them is The Silent Enigma, I think it would be accurate to say the stuff around that time would be my favourite. But I still like the older and newer stuff, just generally not as much. There are execptions, of course.

I'M CONVINCED THAT IT'S IMPOSSIBLE TO HATE ANATHEMA. Because of how their music has changed, there's something for everyone. I have never seen someone who said they hated Anathema, except for one guy who only listened to one song. How lame.

But yeah, Anathema is my favourite band and they are great.

Posted by: Dr Sturm Oct 11 2006, 08:32 PM

Serenades is not horrible, it's just not your thing. Trust me, I really love the album (most particularly, "Sleepless," "Lovelorn Rhapsody" and "They (will always) Die." [not sure which version of that last song I like more though]), but it's not for everyone.
It's a harsh album; sharp yet sleek, and that's not for everyone.
But, you may really start to like Serenades/The Crestfallen (think of Serenades as a sharp sword, The Crestfallen as a knotted baseball bat) if you keep listinening to Anathema's work in general. I know I was quick to dismiss that kind of music long ago, but, as I worked my way back through their catalog, it became much easier to find greatness in it.
Anathema is what got me into Doom, and Metal in general.

Posted by: Chaos Seraph Oct 11 2006, 09:20 PM

Seranades only problem was Darren trying to do clean vocals...
:S

Sleepless is awesome though. Especially the end. The Silent Enigma and Eternity are probably still my favourites in general, although as I said, I've started enjoying their newer material a lot more.

Posted by: Rhiannon Oct 11 2006, 09:33 PM

Eh... while I do think Sleepless was good, Sleepless 96 was better. :( It just sounds better to have cleaner vocals on that kind of song.

Posted by: Chaos Seraph Oct 11 2006, 09:40 PM

Gah. Sleepless 96 was just awkward for me. :<

The song almost felt half hearted attempt at it.

Posted by: Rhiannon Oct 11 2006, 09:45 PM

Half-hearted?! :(

I don't know, it sounded to me like just as much effort was put into it as the original.

Posted by: Chaos Seraph Oct 11 2006, 09:50 PM

It felt too fast, like, Last minute fast, as if it was stuffed in there unplanned.

I dunno.

Posted by: Dr Sturm Oct 11 2006, 10:43 PM

Sleepless 96 was a bonus song, not orginally on the album, but only on the reprinting. Besides, considering their history with Peacville, there could be a very good reason behind it sounding rushed. So, yeah.

And what clean vocals were there Serenades? I seem to have missed the hidden track those were on. *cough cough*

Posted by: Chaos Seraph Oct 12 2006, 03:09 PM

Well, perhaps Clean isn't the right word. More like, less than growled, not exactly clean. Bleagh.

Posted by: Dr Sturm Oct 12 2006, 03:24 PM

Gruff? I didn't think he started doing those until Pentecost III.

Posted by: Dr Sturm Oct 20 2006, 06:44 PM

Woah snap.
I guess.

The [USA] iTunes Music Store finally has Alternative 4. So, you can check out some more Anathema awesome. And it's even the re-release, so you can hear Anathema's cover of Bad Religion's "Better Off Dead," and I think "Goodbye Cruel World" and "Your Possible Pasts" were Pink Floyd covers. Can't really remember, as I don't really listen to those two.

Anyways, that brings the amount of Anathema albums on iTMS USA to... Three. Judgement, A Natural Disaster, and Alternative 4.
<_<

Posted by: Chaos Seraph Oct 21 2006, 11:06 PM

Some kind bastard has uploaded all of Were You There onto Youtube. Go watch them now. The Sleepless bonus isn't on the copy I got either. And its awesome.

( I'm aware how old the uploads are )

Posted by: Dr Sturm Oct 21 2006, 11:19 PM

Were You There was a bit disappointing. Though my attempted procurement of the DVD continues.

Posted by: Dr Sturm Dec 13 2006, 05:57 PM

The tracklist for Anathema's next album, Everything, has been set:
1. THIN AIR (ann further)
2. BRICKS (working title)
3. LIGHTNING SONG
4. SUNLIGHT
5. GET OFF. GET OUT. (working title)
6. ANGELS WALK AMONG US
7. EVERYTHING
8. A SIMPLE MISTAKE
9. VOODOO (working title)
10. NO ONE IS FREE (working title)
11. PARADIGM SHIFT
12. HINDSIGHT

Direct copy and paste; I would never capslock song titles. <_<
They also are saying they will be releasing another song before the album... But it won't be a song from the album.

Posted by: Chaos Seraph Dec 13 2006, 06:21 PM

Ohh, thanks for that Sturm. Can't wait.

And I'm back to Pre Eternity loving again. Man I love Pentecost III.

Posted by: Dr Sturm Dec 13 2006, 07:12 PM

Yar. Kingdom <3

Also, I guess I should note, that their Music For Nations albums (Judgment, A Fine Day to Exit and A Natural Disaster) are being re-released on Sony BMG, and two of their DVDs, Were You There? and A Moment in Time, are being released - wait for it - worldwide. Snap!

Posted by: Chaos Seraph Dec 13 2006, 10:47 PM

Indeed, Kingdom <3

I've had the track on repeat for all of today.

And even more great news.

Posted by: Raijinili Dec 14 2006, 05:21 PM

Sony BMG is ebil.

Posted by: Dr Sturm Dec 14 2006, 05:26 PM

Why?

Posted by: Raijinili Dec 14 2006, 05:28 PM

Ebil DRM.

Posted by: Dr Sturm Dec 14 2006, 05:30 PM

Well, that's your own fault, not theirs.

Posted by: Raijinili Dec 14 2006, 09:22 PM

Not my fault, since I don't buy Sony BMG music.

Posted by: Dr Sturm Jan 10 2007, 10:23 AM

Hahaha, oh wow.
I took a glance at their albums on iTunes today for some reason I don't recollect, and, according to iTunes, Alternative 4 is of the Death/Black Metal genre, and all the rest of Anathema's albums are Rock. Including, but not limited to, Serenades and The Crestfallen EP.

Posted by: Dr Sturm Jan 24 2007, 01:21 AM

Anathema's running their 2006/12/30 concert on a South Finland TV station, which also does internet broadcasts:
http://www.dina.tv/
2200 Helsinki time, which seems to be about eight hours ahead of me...
Of course, I'm having great difficulty just getting the stupid thing to play...

Posted by: Chaos Seraph Jan 25 2007, 11:11 AM

I'm watching it now, but its lagging horribly.

Whoo, fixed.

Oh wait, Anathema are only debuting on the 28th. <.<

Posted by: Chaos Seraph Feb 12 2007, 11:23 PM

I take back everything I said about Vincent not being good at growls, I've had Restless Oblivion on repeat change my mind about that. <_<

Posted by: Dr Sturm Feb 12 2007, 11:34 PM

Always discover something new with Anathema.

Posted by: Chaos Seraph Feb 12 2007, 11:46 PM

I seriously miss those vocals now. D:

Posted by: Dr Sturm Feb 21 2007, 01:27 AM

QUOTE(Daniel Cavanagh @ on "Violence")
I was actually going to give it to Cradle Of Filth. I called them and said, “I’ve got this song.” They said, “Do we have to pay you?” I said, “Yeah.” Then they said no. So, I never did send it. I decided, along with Jamie, that it should end the album because of the way it ends, with the piano. We quickly realized that maybe it didn’t need a vocal, that it should be an instrumental. That’s just the way it went.

I was just wandering around looking for the Transcend cover art, stumbled upon this site, and ended up reading this http://www.seaoftranquility.org/article.php?sid=191 about A Natural Disaster, thought this quote was particularly funny.

Posted by: Chaos Seraph Feb 28 2007, 10:30 PM

Heh.

QUOTE(Dr Sturm @ Oct 12 2006, 03:24 PM) *

Gruff? I didn't think he started doing those until Pentecost III.

I'm such an idiot, that was Vincent. Not Darren. >_<

I dunno why, but I've really started loving all of Eternity now. Previously, only a few songs, Angelica, Cries on the Wind, Ascension, Eternity (Part II), possibly one or two more, have appealed to me off the album, but I enjoy all of it now. Hmm

Posted by: Dr Sturm Feb 28 2007, 10:44 PM

You like Eternity Part II? I just can't get into that.
I can get into (and greatly enjoy) Part I, III and even 24, but I just can't get into Part II.

Posted by: Chaos Seraph Feb 28 2007, 10:50 PM

Vincent's vocals on Part I on the 3rd repeat of "Do you think we're forever?" kind of ruin it for me, but its still a good song.

I have no idea why I like it, but next to Cries on the Wind, its probably my favourite song on the album. I just really like the tempo change and guitar tuning.

Posted by: Chaos Seraph Feb 28 2007, 11:03 PM

Random but, I'm bored. So, here are my favourite songs of each album.

Seranades - Sleepless, Sweet Tears, The Sweet Suffering
Pentecost III - Kingdom, We The Gods
The Silent Enigma - A Dying Wish, Restless Oblivion, Cerulean Twilight
Eternity - Cries on the Wind, Angelica, Eternity (Pt II)
Alternative 4 - Shroud of False, Inner Silence, ( and here I'm torn, I like Fragile Dreams, but it's really repetitive, so I guess... ) Destiny
Judgement - One Last Goodbye, Wings of God, Parisienne Moonlight
A Fine Day to Exit - Pressure, Looking Outside Inside, Temporary Peace
A Natural Disaster - Pulled Under at 2000 meters per second, Flying, Violence

Posted by: Dr Sturm Feb 28 2007, 11:17 PM

Well, I shall do the same.
The Crestfallen: "Everwake", "They Die", "Crestfallen", "... And I Lust"
Serenades: "They (will always) Die", "Sleepless", "Scars of the Old Stream"
Pentecost III: "Kingdom", "We, The Gods", "Pentecost III"
The Silent Enigma: "A Dying Wish", "The Silent Enigma", "Sunset of Age"
Eternity: "Cries on the Wind", "Angelica", "The Beloved", "Eternity Part III" (oh wow, you're right about Eternity), "Eternity Part I", "Suicide Veil", "Hope"
Alternative 4: "Lost Control" (anyone who doesn't mention this fails), "Inner Silence", "Shroud of False", "Regret"
Judgement: "One Last Goodbye", "Anyone, Anywhere", "Judgement"
A Fine Day to Exit: "Leave No Trace", "Temporary Peace", "Panic", "A Fine Day to Exit"
A Natural Disaster I've got a little secret. I don't actually have this album yet. :( But I do like "Pulled Under at 2000 Metres Per Second"

Also, toss in a few songs on the Digipacks I enjoy: "Eternal Rise of the Sun" (fucking limited 7"'s preventing me from hearing this for so long), "The Silent Enigma (Orchestral)", "Better Off Dead"
PS ASAPH: "The Sweet Suffering" is actually a song from The Crestfallen, it appears on The Crestfallen/Serenades combo album

Posted by: Chaos Seraph Feb 28 2007, 11:25 PM

The Serenades album I've got is the combo one. Oh well.

I was trying to limit it, to be frank, there isn't really an Anathema song I dislike, bar Harmonium possibly, since the electronic drum beats kill it. They're all awesome in their own way.

Augh, how did I forget Lost Control off my list? /wrist

And by extension, you miss out on "Eternal Rise of the Sun" and "Nailed to the Cross".
Unless you're willing to fetch the dark Resonance[ 2].

But I do indeed agree that Anathema can do no wrong.

Posted by: Chaos Seraph Feb 28 2007, 11:29 PM

I actually have the single version of that, "We Are The Bible". I'm pretty they're on one of, if not both, of the Resonance copies too.

Except Nailed to the Cross has Nailed To The Cross / 666 instead of the aforementioned.

Because it has the (perhaps) satirical "666" attached to the end of the song. Like "Memento Mori".

Sorry, I must have read that wrong.

Actually, checking the files, I have both Serenades and Extra Tracks as well as the normal Serenades album. Yet WMP only plays the Serenades and Extra Tracks folder. Odd.

No wait, I'm wrong.

Posted by: Rhiannon Mar 1 2007, 04:02 AM

WELL FINE I GUESS I'LL JUST DO WHAT YOU GUYS WERE DOING POSTS LATER.

A Fine Day to Exit: Leave No Trace, Underworld.
Alternative 4: Shroud of False, Better Off Dead, Empty.
Eternity: Angelica, The Beloved, Eternity Part III (Acoustic), Cries on the Wind.
Judgement: Deep, One Last Goodbye, Emotional Winter.
Serenades: Lovelorn Rhapsody, Sleepless, J'ai Fait Une Promesse.
The Crestfallen: Everwake, Crestfallen.
Pentecost III: We, the Gods, Memento Mori, Pentecost III.
The Silent Enigma: Restless Oblivion, The Silent Enigma, Shroud of Frost, A Dying Wish, Cerulean Twilight, Black Orchid, Sleepless 96, The Silent Enigma (Orchestral).

YEAH SO WHAT IF I LISTED ALMOST ALL OF THE SONGS ON THE SILENT ENIGMA. I just love it so much. :(

Posted by: Chaos Seraph Mar 1 2007, 04:08 PM

No Kingdom on Pentecost III? Whaaaa

Posted by: Rhiannon Mar 1 2007, 11:59 PM

I LISTED PENTECOST III LOOK AGAIN.

And I don't really like Kingdom much. :( It seems kind of boring. Actually, I don't remember it at all. But the fact that I don't remember it means that I didn't like it enough to consider it a favourite!

Posted by: Chaos Seraph Mar 2 2007, 12:38 AM

;_;

Posted by: Wally Mar 2 2007, 01:34 AM

Well, I've only listened to a few songs, but so far I like it.

Posted by: Dr Sturm Mar 3 2007, 01:03 AM

Out of boredom, and because yet another LCN member falls to my plan of turning this from a Mari to an Anathema fansite, my history with Anathema:

I believe it mid 2003 that someone randomly recommended it on GFAQs to someone else but I decided to check them out too. I found only a few sngs on Kazaa, but I did enjoy them a lot; "One Last Goodbye", "Wings of God" (are these two the songs that get everyone into Anathema?) and "Leave No Trace".
Then I forgot about them for a year. I listened to them, still, but it was summer of 2004 that I looked into them again. I found "The Silent Enigma (Orchestral)" and "Angelica" and fell in love. So I decided to download their discography, and, after that, realized it was time to buy all their music, because music this good is worth the money. <3

Anyways. Enough of that. How did the rest of you get into Anathema?
Preferably those that weren't introduced to them by this thread, but...

Posted by: Chaos Seraph Mar 3 2007, 01:19 AM

You suggested a couple of songs on mIRC late last year, I got Cries on the Wind and Sleepless. Kept them for a while, but I started to look into Doom Metal more. Bumped into Draconian, remembered Anathema, decided to check them out more, here I am.

Posted by: Rhiannon Mar 3 2007, 01:27 AM

I heard them when Sturm was listening to them because he's a jerk, and then after a short period of thinking they were stupid, I came to love them.

Posted by: Dr Sturm Mar 3 2007, 01:29 AM

QUOTE
short period

Hyperbole.

Posted by: Rhiannon Mar 3 2007, 01:42 AM

I don't even REMEMBER disliking them. I only said that because you insist that I disliked them at one point. I say "short period" because if it's true, it was for such a small amount of time that I completely forgot about it.

Posted by: Sauce XIV Mar 3 2007, 05:54 PM

Yeah, I finally checked Anathema out.

Two words: Freaking godlike.

And by godlike, I mean exceptionally awesome music.

As Asaph would know from the channel, I especially like Pulled Under at 2000 Meters per Second >_>

Posted by: Chaos Seraph Mar 3 2007, 06:03 PM

FUCK YEAH

Posted by: Dr Sturm Mar 10 2007, 07:21 PM

I never read the FAQ section of Anathema's website.

Posted by: Chaos Seraph Apr 8 2007, 01:05 AM

Yeah, that was one of my favourite tracks off it for quite some time. Electricity is probably the one I enjoy most now though. <3 when it hits 2:04. The bass is just win.

SET LIST

Fragile Dreams
Empty
A Simple Mistake
Balance/Closer
A Natural Disaster
Angels Walk Among Us
Deep
Flying

I screamed for One Last Goodbye and Sleepless a lot, but we didn't get them. :(

Didn't get any autographs, but I got some drum lid they threw into the crowd, and I got a T Shirt. Bastard next to me got the tambourine Danny threw into the crowd.

Their stage presence is fucking amazing. Vincent was going nuts, Danny did some fuckawesome improvised solos, and Vincent even turned round his Mic for us to sing into during Closer, Deep, and Empty. John wasn't there though, because his girlfriend was having a baby.

ALSO THEY SAID THE RECEPTION THEY GOT HERE WAS WAY BETTER THAN ENGLAND, SO THEY ARE COMING BACK. HAH.

Porcupine Tree were the lead act, and they played a ton of stuff too, also mind blowing. Colin did some amazing Bass solo as an encore, and Trains was beautiful.

No pictures sadly. :(((

I live in N.Y., so It's highly unlikely they well be anywhere close.

Fuck my wife. KScope has released two of the tracks from Hindsight for download purchase (on http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?id=286215095&s=143441 [with fucked up previews] and elsewhere), the new song, Unchained, and the rearrangement of Flying.

AND I CAN'T FUCKING BUY IT BECAUSE I HAVE NO CHECK CARD BECAUSE THAT FUCKER STOLE IT
I have to wait for anathema_ru to post pirated versions. :/

Your wife stole it?

Posted by: Dr Sturm Aug 4 2008, 11:55 PM

The Hindsight version of "Flying" is amazing. <3
"Unchained" is an okay song. It's kind of reminiscent of songs like "Scars of the Old Stream", except with a lot more Cello.

OH YEAH AND ITUNES IS RETARDED THEY HAVE THE SONGS MISLABELED.

Anathema's website is now down officially. As in, not just because they forgot to renew the domain, it is down by their choice.

Posted by: Irysa Aug 23 2008, 05:19 AM

It's only down for updates.

It'll be back up soon. Jeez, stop making me worry.

Posted by: Dr Sturm Aug 23 2008, 05:22 AM

It's funnier to make you worry. I'm actually excited, I think (I hope) this means that they're updating the site for the new album (meaning it's coming, finally!)

By the way, you can see what now adorns the wall above my keyboard:

It's really soft and pretty feeling.

I like normal posters better, I don't have to wash them.

Posted by: Dr Sturm Sep 11 2008, 05:41 AM

Why would you have to wash it?

Okay.

So, a year or two ago, when I was but a lurker with no account, I found this tread and checked out a few songs by them, namely "Wings of God", "A Dying Wish", "Shroud of False", and "Pulled Under at 2000 Metres a Second".

I thought they were okay, but nothing too special. Time passed and they got lost in my computer somewhere.

A few months ago, I decided to clean up my music folders a bit and came across the tracks I downloaded.

I fell in love.

My musical taste had changed a lot since then. (Think My Chemical Romance to Anathema) and I asked Asaph which albums were good. I ended up downloading every single release by them, and they are definitely one of my favorite bands.

My favorite album is probably "Judgement", and I'm not sure Death/Doom is my thing. But who knows? Maybe I'll learn to like it more.

THANKS ASAPH.

I think this speaks for itself.

And yes, I understand that befriending the artists I like on facebook makes me a tool.

EDIT: Link'd because the picture stretched the page.

Posted by: Dr Sturm Jul 24 2009, 04:13 PM

How does it make you a tool? Hell, I just added Duncan Patterson to my last.fm friends.

Posted by: Raijinili Jul 24 2009, 08:47 PM

I know Sturm's real name through Facebook.

Posted by: Dr Sturm Jul 24 2009, 08:57 PM

How do you know about Facebook?

Posted by: Raijinili Jul 24 2009, 10:18 PM

I... I don't know!

Posted by: Dr Sturm Aug 2 2009, 04:37 PM

We might actually see the new album this year. Vincent said on his Twitter and Facebook that there are only five days left of recording.

Oh wow, can't believe I haven't gushed about the fact that the new Anathema album has been officially announced and dated for May 31. I already preordered both the vinyl and the CD-DVDA versions. The latter is part of your birthday gift, Sasha.
Currently listening to "Thin Air" (which can be found by subscribing to the email list). Good stuff - I can't describe how excited I am for this album.

Tracklist:
1: Thin Air
2: Summernight Horizon
3: Dreaming Light
4: Everything
5: Angels Walk Among Us
6: Presence
7: A Simple Mistake
8: Get Off, Get Out
9: Universal
10: Hindsight

Well, this has to be the most beautiful disc of 2010.
Though I liked Everything and Angels Walk Among Us A LOT more as singles.
